Brussels asks Spain to comply with the requirements of the 2010/31/EU Directive on energy efficiency in buildings

The European Commission has asked Spain to fully comply with the requirements of the 2010/31/EU Directive, relating to energy efficiency in buildings.

Said Directive establishes that member states much apply minimum energy efficiency requirements to both existing buildings as well as new ones, so as to guarantee the certification and demands the inspection of heating and air-conditioning facilities. Countries should also ensure that all new buildings constructed from 2021 on consume next to no energy (in the case of public buildings, the deadline is 2019).

As indicated by the European Commission, in a fact sheet published on February 25, some deficiencies have been detected regarding the Spanish legislation when implementing the Directive related to the definition of buildings with almost zero energy consumption, their standards and their application over time. In addition Brussels points out that, the exemptions of the requirements that these buildings must comply with in our legislation, go beyond the provisions of the Directive.

From this moment on, Spain has two months to correct the situation and notify the Commission of the measures adopted.
